So G! Part 1: The Importance of SOGIE Bill


First of all, the SOGIE Bill is an anti-discrimination for the rights of the LGBT community which requires consequences on unfair treatment and biases towards anyone based on their Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression. Despite significant strides in the advancement of gender equality in the constitution, progress has been made for recognizing the rights of persons of diverse sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE) to be protected from any forms of discrimination both in private and public institutions. Its importance speaks for itself. The major reason why there is a need to obtain this bill because there are also those who fail to obtain proper recourse due to the limited judicial understanding of gender expression and identity.


The bill acknowledges the Philippines’ duties under international law particularly the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. It thus recognizes the non-discrimination of the LGBTQ community belongs to national and international duty. By all means, the bill meant to fulfill the rights and to end discrimination against our fellow individuals.
