Manny Pacquiao Triggered People With His Homophobic Slur

Updated: Jun 21, 2021

In 2016, a world champion boxer Manny Pacquiao gave a homophobic comment in an interview, he said

“It’s common sense. Will you see any animals where the male is to male and female is to female? – the animals are better…”

which left the whole community displeased. The outburst of this issue even reached the international media that caused him to lose a sponsorship from one of the most popular athletic wear Nike. Several hours later the boxer posted an apology letter however he said that he is not condemning anyone but rather he is just telling the truth from what he read in the bible.

The famous actor-comedian Vice Ganda posted a tweet on Twitter saying that

“The LGBT is a group of people. We are humans. But not animals. Though we’re no saints we will pray for Manny Pacquiao”

The dismay of the people continues as Ladlad, an LGBT political organization, also showed dismay towards Pacquiao's comment. “Rep. Pacquiao… betrays a shallow understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity, nay, even the very basics of science,” said the group in a post on their Facebook page.

In my own personal point of view, I believe that whether you are a public figure we should always be careful about what we are saying, especially that media is interconnected with almost everything and the information can rapidly spread. Regardless of religion I believe that we should learn how to respect each other and accept each other’s differences and let love be the center of all.
